Opuntia ficus-indica (Prickly Pear) Pads

Supplied as pads for propagation or a delicious tortoise treat.

Opuntia ficus-indica, commonly known as the Prickly Pear, is a bushy, tree-like cactus prized for its bold structure and vibrant seasonal display. It develops branching, flattened pads that act as stems, each grey-green in tone with a slightly waxy surface. The pads are oval or oblong and edged with clusters of short spines or fine bristles. From spring through summer, the plant bears bright, bowl-shaped flowers in shades of yellow or orange, followed by rounded fruits that mature to hues of red, orange, or purple. These colourful fruits add visual richness while complementing the plant’s sculptural form.

Growing Conditions

Opuntia ficus-indica thrives in full sunlight and well-drained, sandy soil. It prefers warmth and tolerates dry conditions with ease, making it an excellent choice for sunny windowsills, conservatories, or outdoor pots in summer. Water sparingly, allowing the soil to dry completely before watering again. Overwatering should be avoided to prevent root rot. This cactus favours temperatures above ten degrees Celsius and should be moved indoors or protected during colder weather. A cactus or succulent compost containing grit or perlite provides ideal drainage and aeration.

Care and Maintenance

This species is remarkably easy to maintain. Water lightly during the growing season and reduce watering in winter. Feed once a month in spring and summer with a diluted cactus fertiliser to support flowering and fruiting. Remove any damaged pads using clean, sharp tools, and wear gloves to avoid contact with spines. Repot every few years to refresh the growing medium and encourage healthy root development.

Environmental Benefits

Opuntia ficus-indica contributes to air freshness indoors and provides habitat value when grown outdoors. Its flowers attract pollinators, while its fruits offer visual appeal and potential culinary uses.
