Hypoestes phyllostachya (Polka Dot Plant)

Hypoestes phyllostachya, commonly known as the Polka Dot Plant, is a lively evergreen sub-shrub prized for its colourful foliage and compact form. It grows up to 30 centimetres tall, forming a neat, bushy shape ideal for table displays or terrariums. The thin, ovate leaves are dark green and heavily spotted with bright pink, deep rose, or sometimes white markings. Each leaf has a soft texture and delicate veining that enhances its ornamental appeal. When mature, the plant produces small, tubular magenta flowers arranged in short terminal spikes. The striking leaf pattern and gentle size make it a favourite for brightening indoor spaces and miniature gardens.

Growing Conditions

Hypoestes phyllostachya thrives in bright, indirect light, which helps maintain its vibrant leaf colour. Too little light may cause fading, while harsh sunlight can scorch the foliage. It prefers a warm, humid environment and free-draining compost kept lightly moist. Water regularly during spring and summer, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings. Ideal temperatures range from eighteen to twenty-four degrees Celsius. High humidity supports leaf colour and reduces tip browning, making bathrooms and terrariums excellent growing locations.

Care and Maintenance

This plant is easy to care for and responds well to regular trimming. Pinch back growing tips to encourage branching and prevent legginess. Feed monthly during the growing season with a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Remove faded flowers and yellowing leaves to maintain shape and freshness. Repot annually in spring using fresh compost to renew nutrients and support vigorous growth.

Environmental Benefits

Hypoestes phyllostachya adds colour and softness to interior settings while contributing to improved indoor air freshness. Its playful spotted leaves bring energy and charm to terrariums, bottle gardens, and compact plant arrangements.
