Selaginella uncinata (Peacock Spike Moss)

Selaginella uncinata, commonly known as the Peacock Spike Moss, is a captivating semi-evergreen perennial admired for its iridescent foliage and fine, moss-like texture. It forms a dense, spreading mat of delicate, fern-like fronds that root as they grow. The leaves shimmer with metallic tones of blue, turquoise, and green, changing slightly with the light. This lustrous effect gives the plant a unique, almost luminous appearance. Its low, creeping growth habit makes it perfect for terrariums, shallow containers, or as a ground cover beneath taller indoor plants. The soft texture and shifting colour provide an elegant, tranquil quality in any display.

Growing Conditions

Selaginella uncinata thrives in humid, shaded environments with consistent moisture. It prefers bright but indirect light, as strong sunlight can fade its distinctive blue-green hue. The compost should be rich in organic matter and retain moisture without becoming waterlogged. A mixture containing peat-free compost, fine bark, and perlite works well. Maintain temperatures between sixteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius and keep humidity high through regular misting or placement in a terrarium. The plant benefits from gentle airflow and should be protected from sudden temperature changes.

Care and Maintenance

This species is low-maintenance when kept evenly moist and humid. Mist frequently to preserve leaf colour and texture, especially in drier rooms. Feed once a month during spring and summer using a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser. Trim back any overly long or faded stems to maintain a compact mat. Repot annually in fresh, moist compost to encourage vigorous growth. Its trailing habit makes it suitable for hanging displays, shallow dishes, or as an accent within mixed plant arrangements.

Environmental Benefits

Selaginella uncinata enhances indoor air freshness and introduces gentle colour shifts to shaded areas. Its metallic foliage adds depth and calm to terrariums and decorative houseplant displays.
