Vriesea sp. (Orange Spike Bromeliad)

The Orange Spike Bromeliad, is a slow-growing evergreen species prized for its striking structure and vivid colour. It forms a thick rosette of broad, strap-like leaves arranged symmetrically, each leaf marked with irregular maroon-red and green stripes that create a bold, patterned display. The foliage has a smooth, slightly glossy surface that reflects light, adding depth and movement to the plant’s appearance. In summer, a tall, sword-shaped spike rises from the centre of the rosette, glowing in shades of intense orange or red. This long-lasting floral bract stands proudly above the foliage, adding height and dramatic contrast.

Growing Conditions

Vriesea sp. thrives in bright, indirect light and warm, humid conditions. It prefers temperatures between eighteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius and should be kept away from cold draughts. A free-draining, airy compost, such as one designed for orchids or bromeliads, ensures healthy root growth. Water should be poured into the central cup formed by the rosette rather than directly into the compost, and replaced weekly to prevent stagnation. Keep the soil just slightly moist and avoid overwatering. The plant benefits from regular misting to maintain humidity, especially during dry indoor periods.

Care and Maintenance

This bromeliad is straightforward to maintain. Feed monthly during the growing season with a diluted bromeliad fertiliser, applying it to the central cup or as a light foliar spray. Remove spent flower spikes to encourage new growth. After flowering, the main rosette slowly dies back but produces small offsets, or pups, which can be separated and replanted once established.

Environmental Benefits

Vriesea sp. improves indoor air quality and introduces tropical brightness to interior displays. Its vivid orange spike and patterned leaves provide texture and colour in homes, offices, and conservatories.
