Sansevieria trifasciata (Mother-in-law's Tongue)

Sansevieria trifasciata, widely known as the Mother-in-law’s Tongue or Snake Plant, is a bold, architectural evergreen perennial admired for its upright habit and striking leaf pattern. It forms dense clumps of sword-shaped leaves that rise vertically from the base, each leaf stiff, pointed, and elegantly variegated. The deep green surface is marked with irregular bands of pale grey-green, giving a textured, marbled effect. Mature plants may reach up to 1 metre in height, creating a sculptural display ideal for contemporary interiors. During summer or autumn, racemes of small, tubular, pale greenish-white to cream flowers may emerge, occasionally releasing a delicate fragrance. These modest blooms add an unexpected charm to the plant’s strong form.

Growing Conditions

Sansevieria trifasciata thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates lower levels, making it one of the most adaptable houseplants available. It prefers a free-draining cactus compost and benefits from infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings, particularly in winter, as the thick leaves store moisture efficiently. Ideal temperatures range between sixteen and twenty-eight degrees Celsius. It tolerates dry indoor air well and seldom requires misting. Avoid overwatering or poorly drained pots, which can lead to root rot. This plant suits modern homes, offices, and minimalist interiors thanks to its upright, space-saving structure.

Care and Maintenance

This species is exceptionally low-maintenance. Feed lightly during spring and summer with a diluted cactus or succulent fertiliser. Remove damaged leaves at the base to maintain a neat appearance. Repot every few years when the roots begin to crowd the container. It is also known for improving air quality by absorbing indoor pollutants.

Environmental Benefits

Sansevieria trifasciata enhances living spaces with its architectural form and tolerance of neglect. Its air-purifying ability and clean lines make it both practical and visually calming.
