Lithops sp. (Living Stones)
Lithops sp., commonly known as Living Stones or Pebble Plants, are small, slow-growing succulents admired for their extraordinary resemblance to stones. Each plant consists of a pair of thick, fleshy leaves that form a domed shape divided by a central fissure. The surface is patterned in muted shades of grey, beige, or brown, often speckled to imitate pebbles from their native African habitats. This mimicry allows them to blend naturally into stony ground. New leaves emerge from the centre annually, gradually replacing the old pair. In autumn, mature plants produce daisy-like flowers in shades of white or yellow, offering a striking contrast to the subdued foliage.
Growing Conditions
Lithops sp. thrive in bright, direct sunlight for at least six hours daily. A position on a sunny windowsill or under strong artificial light encourages compact growth and vivid surface markings. They require extremely free-draining, sandy soil to prevent moisture retention around the roots. Use a cactus or succulent compost blended with coarse grit or perlite. Water sparingly—only when the soil is completely dry—and withhold watering during the plant’s dormant period after flowering. Ideal temperatures range between fifteen and twenty-eight degrees Celsius, with low humidity levels similar to their desert origins.
Care and Maintenance
These succulents demand minimal care. Avoid frequent watering, as excessive moisture may cause splitting or rot. Remove spent flower heads gently once they dry. Repot rarely, as the plants prefer confined pots that mimic their natural conditions. Over time, clusters form as new pairs of leaves appear beside older ones, creating small colonies that resemble polished stones.
Environmental Benefits
Lithops sp. bring sculptural form and natural intrigue to interior plant collections. Their drought resistance and slow growth make them ideal for minimalist, low-maintenance displays.
