Athyrium filix-femina (Lady Fern)

Athyrium filix-femina, commonly known as Lady Fern, is a vigorous deciduous fern native to the UK. It forms graceful clumps of fresh green, finely divided fronds that bring height and texture to shaded planting.

The lacy, lance-shaped fronds have finely toothed segments and can reach 80cm or more. Depending on the individual plant, the central midrib may be green or develop contrasting red tones.

  • Useful for creating naturalistic habitat around wildlife ponds

Growing tips

  • Plant in moist, humus-rich soil
  • Best in partial or full shade
  • Keep newly planted ferns watered during dry weather
  • Ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders and pond surrounds
  • Add leaf mould or garden compost to help retain moisture
  • Leave old fronds over winter if you want to provide extra shelter for wildlife, then remove them as new growth appears

Do you have a damp, shaded part of the garden where flowering plants struggle? Athyrium filix-femina thrives in these conditions and creates a natural woodland feel.

Plant Lady Fern with native primroses, wood anemones and other shade-loving plants, or use it around a wildlife pond where its arching fronds can provide valuable cover.
