Polystichum tsus-simense (Korean Rock Fern)
Polystichum tsus-simense, known as the Korean Rock Fern, is a compact evergreen fern prized for its tidy structure and rich green foliage. It forms small, tufted clumps reaching about 45 centimetres in height, with upright, narrowly lance-shaped fronds. Each frond is finely divided into bipinnate leaflets with pointed tips, giving a refined and symmetrical appearance. The deep green fronds have a slightly leathery texture and remain attractive throughout the year, bringing depth and contrast to shaded displays. Its neat form makes it suitable for indoor pots, terrariums, or cool garden borders, where it adds structure without overwhelming nearby plants.
Growing Conditions
Polystichum tsus-simense thrives in partial to full shade and prefers evenly moist, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. It performs well in temperatures between twelve and twenty-two degrees Celsius, adapting easily to both indoor and outdoor environments. Indoors, it flourishes in bright, indirect light with moderate humidity. Keep the compost consistently moist, never allowing it to dry completely. Protection from harsh sunlight prevents leaf scorch, while cooler conditions encourage dense, compact growth. It is also an excellent choice for shaded patios, rock gardens, or underplanting in woodland-style plantings.
Care and Maintenance
This species is low-maintenance and reliable. Water regularly during the growing season to maintain steady moisture. Apply a diluted, balanced fertiliser once a month in spring and summer. Remove older or damaged fronds in early spring to refresh the plant’s appearance. Repot every two to three years using fresh compost enriched with leaf mould or peat-free organic matter. It can be divided easily when mature to create new plants.
Environmental Benefits
Polystichum tsus-simense adds natural texture and year-round greenery to shaded interiors and gardens. Its evergreen fronds improve air freshness and provide subtle structure to mixed plant displays.
