Heptapleurum arboricola 'Variegated'
Heptapleurum arboricola ‘Variegated’, also known as the Variegated Dwarf Umbrella Tree, is a refined evergreen shrub admired for its glossy foliage and elegant symmetry. It develops long, arching stalks that carry clusters of seven to nine leathery leaflets arranged like the spokes of an umbrella. Each leaflet is smooth, slightly curved, and patterned with creamy-yellow or pale green marbling against a deep green base. This natural variegation brightens shaded interiors and adds visual texture to plant groupings. The plant maintains a compact, bushy form and, when mature, can reach up to 1.5 metres in height indoors, creating a graceful focal point for living rooms, conservatories, or offices.
Growing Conditions
Heptapleurum arboricola ‘Variegated’ thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates partial shade. Too little light may reduce variegation, while strong sunlight can scorch the leaves. It prefers moderate temperatures between sixteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius and steady humidity. Use a free-draining potting mix, keeping the soil lightly moist through regular but moderate watering. Allow the top layer to dry slightly before watering again. The plant adapts easily to normal household conditions but benefits from gentle misting to maintain leaf freshness. Avoid cold draughts or sudden temperature changes to prevent leaf drop.
Care and Maintenance
This species is undemanding and reliable. Feed every four to six weeks during spring and summer using a balanced, diluted fertiliser. Wipe the leaves with a soft, damp cloth to remove dust and enhance their gloss. Prune lightly to maintain shape and control height. Repot every two years with fresh compost to support root health and sustained growth.
Environmental Benefits
Heptapleurum arboricola ‘Variegated’ improves indoor air quality and brings natural elegance to interior décor. Its patterned leaves and upright habit create calm, balanced structure in home or workspace settings.
