Anthurium andraeanum (Flamingo Flower)

Anthurium andraeanum, commonly known as the Flamingo Flower or Painter’s Palette, is a tropical evergreen perennial admired for its bold colour and elegant form. It grows up to 60 centimetres tall, producing large, glossy leaves of deep green with arrow-shaped bases reaching about 30 centimetres in length. Above the foliage rise striking heart-shaped spathes, most often in bright red, though sometimes pink or white. At the centre of each spathe stands a slender, pale yellow spadix that carries tiny flowers. The combination of rich green foliage and vivid, waxy blooms gives the plant an instantly recognisable appearance and makes it a favourite for indoor displays throughout the year.

Growing Conditions

Anthurium andraeanum thrives in bright, indirect light and warm, humid environments. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, so filtered light is best. It prefers a loose, free-draining compost rich in organic matter—an orchid or aroid mix is ideal. Maintain temperatures between eighteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius and keep the air humid with regular misting or by placing the pot on a pebble tray. Water when the top layer of compost begins to dry, using soft or filtered water to avoid leaf damage. Avoid letting the plant sit in excess water, which may cause root rot.

Care and Maintenance

This species is easy to care for and long-lived with the right conditions. Feed every four to six weeks during the growing season with a diluted, high-phosphorus fertiliser to support flowering. Remove any faded blooms or damaged leaves to maintain its neat form. Repot every two years to refresh the growing medium and encourage steady root growth.

Environmental Benefits

Anthurium andraeanum enhances indoor air freshness while bringing tropical colour and sheen to interiors. Its distinctive red spathes and glossy foliage create a lasting impression in modern and classic décor alike.
