Exo Terra Pro Terrarium™ X-Small Tall
Create a little more height without taking up a wider footprint with the Exo Terra Pro Terrarium X-Small Tall. Measuring 30 x 30 x 45cm, this glass terrarium offers an appealing format for upright planting, slender branches and carefully selected miniature epiphytes. It is a useful choice when your design is intended to grow upwards rather than spread across a broad base.
Build a small vertical plant display
Use the extra height to arrange interest at different levels. A narrow cork feature at the rear can form the centre of the design, with low planting around its base and a small mounted specimen higher up. Keep the front relatively open so the eye can follow the composition from bottom to top.
Compared with the X-Small Wide, this model adds 15cm of overall height while retaining the same stated width and depth. That gives more scope for upright decoration, although substrate, pots and any background will reduce the usable planting space. Plan the finished layout before filling the enclosure.
Choose plants for the available space
Consider miniature tropical ferns and compact foliage plants for the lower planting. An appropriately selected miniature orchid can provide interest above, provided you can meet its particular temperature, light and watering needs. Epiphytes naturally grow on other plants for support; they should not automatically be planted in the same compost as ground-rooting species.
Keep the plant palette small. A single mounted feature with a quiet green understory can look more effective here than several competing specimens. Avoid buying a vigorous climber simply because its current leaves are small: this remains a compact enclosure, even with the additional height.
Practical features for a planted terrarium
The single front door has a push latch and integrated lock, allowing access for watering and pruning. A removable, lockable stainless steel mesh top helps when installing taller decoration. Adjustable ventilation provides three positions for changing airflow, while the deep waterproof base supports a planted layout.
Rear inlets, internal tubing channels and misting-nozzle attachment points help organise equipment. The terrarium is Monsoon-ready, but the Exo Terra Monsoon system itself is not included. These features allow you to plan a more convenient setup without trailing tubing through the front door.
Care from the base to the upper planting
Think about how water will move through the design. Mounted plants and those rooted in compost may dry at different rates, so check each area rather than misting the entire enclosure automatically. Keep a way to remove excess water and ensure the lower planting does not become a permanently wet sump.
Light must reach the plants, not just the top of the terrarium. Position decoration so it does not completely shade the base, and select suitable lighting for the species you intend to grow. Leave room for new shoots to develop without touching the lid or being pressed against the glass.
The X-Small Tall works particularly well as a carefully edited vertical garden. It also retains the secure access features useful for suitable animal setups, although enclosure size and conditions must always be assessed against the needs of the individual species.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the X-Small Tall and X-Small Wide?
Both have stated width and depth measurements of 30 x 30cm. The X-Small Tall is 45cm high, compared with 30cm for the Wide, providing extra room for vertical planting.
Can miniature orchids grow in the X-Small Tall terrarium?
Suitable miniature species can, provided you meet their individual requirements. Check mature size, temperature, light and root-drying needs; not every small orchid is suited to a warm, humid enclosure.
Can I add a planted background to this terrarium?
A suitably designed background is an option. Account for the space it occupies, keep ventilation unobstructed and follow the background material's installation and curing instructions before adding plants.
How should I light a tall miniature terrarium?
Choose lighting for your plants and check that lower foliage receives enough light. Avoid placing a dense canopy directly beneath the lamp, where it could shade everything below.
Does the X-Small Tall include an automatic misting system?
No. It has features for routing tubing and fitting misting nozzles, but the Exo Terra Monsoon system is not included. Manual watering may be sufficient for a carefully chosen plant collection.
