Exo Terra Pro Terrarium™ Medium Tall
The Exo Terra Pro Terrarium Medium Tall provides both width and height for a more developed planted arrangement. Its 60 x 45 x 60cm proportions suit a layered tropical garden, with room to place low foliage beneath upright features and carefully selected mounted plants. Choose it when you want vertical interest without restricting the design to one narrow column of planting.
Create several levels of interest
Try dividing the scene into two unequal groups: a taller structure towards one end and a lower, more open planting area at the other. This gives you places to display plants at different heights while preserving an uninterrupted view into part of the terrarium. A visible gap can be as important as the planted sections.
Plan the rear of the arrangement before adding the foreground. Check that you can reach behind branches, remove a small pot and inspect the base without pulling everything apart. A planted wall may look impressive, but a design that remains accessible is easier to enjoy over the longer term.
Combine foliage with selected epiphytes
Compact tropical ferns and suitable small-leaved foliage plants can form the lower planting. Selected miniature orchids or small bromeliads offer possibilities higher up, where an appropriate support or planting pocket can show them to advantage. Leave room for the mature spread of leaves, not just their current size.
Build the plant list around a shared range of temperatures and light conditions. Height creates different positions for planting, but it does not guarantee separate climates. Specialist plants with demanding cooling or drying requirements need a setup designed around those needs rather than an assumed rainforest environment.
Access and airflow for a planted enclosure
Two front-opening doors with push latches and integrated locks provide access across the front. The removable stainless steel mesh top also locks into place, helping when you need to work from above. Three-position adjustable ventilation lets you change the front vent opening.
Rear cable and tubing inlets, internal tubing channels and misting-nozzle attachment points help organise accessories. These features prepare the enclosure for an Exo Terra Monsoon misting system, which is not included. The Pro design also incorporates a raised bottom frame.
Plan lighting and watering together
Consider where water from mounted plants will fall. A fern below a regularly watered mount may receive more moisture than a similar plant elsewhere. Match the growing media to the planting and preserve an accessible way to check and remove surplus water. Do not assume the terrarium will drain itself.
Choose lighting that reaches the lower planting as well as the upper features. Space larger leaves so they do not form a solid canopy across the enclosure. Monitor the conditions you actually achieve and adjust plant positions, watering or ventilation when needed, especially as the display fills out.
The Medium Tall offers room for a detailed composition without demanding a 90cm-wide installation. It can be developed as a plant-only display or assessed for an appropriate animal habitat. Where animals are involved, their adult space, lighting and environmental requirements must guide the final design.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Medium Tall terrarium best suited to growing?
Its proportions suit layered tropical planting with compact ground-level foliage and selected plants on upright supports. Species choice still depends on the light, temperature and moisture conditions you can maintain.
Can I use the Medium Tall for a planted living wall?
Yes, with a suitably designed background or support system. Allow for its depth, provide appropriate rooting spaces and keep both ventilation and maintenance access clear.
Does a tall terrarium automatically create different temperature zones?
No. Conditions depend on the room, lighting, ventilation and any added equipment. Measure temperatures at relevant plant positions rather than assuming that height alone creates suitable zones.
Should I use the same growing medium for every plant?
Not necessarily. Ground-rooting plants, epiphytic orchids and other specialists may need different root conditions. Separate pots or mounts can help, provided all plants suit the enclosure's overall climate.
Is the Medium Tall deeper than the Medium Wide?
No. Both are listed as 60cm wide and 45cm deep. The Medium Tall increases the height from 45cm to 60cm, providing additional vertical space rather than a larger footprint.
