Exo Terra Pro Terrarium™ Small Wide
The Exo Terra Pro Terrarium Small Wide offers a balanced cube-shaped space for building a miniature tropical garden. Measuring 45 x 45 x 45cm, it provides scope for low foreground plants, a leafy central feature and a modest backdrop within one display. It is a versatile choice when you would like more planting freedom than a tiny terrarium without committing to a long enclosure.
A balanced layout from front to back
Use the proportions to create a scene with a clear foreground, middle and rear. Low planting can frame the front, a compact fern can provide the main leafy shape, and a small piece of cork or wood can draw the eye towards the back. Leave an open area so the arrangement still has a sense of space.
You do not need to fill the cube immediately. Start with a few well-chosen plants and allow their growth to complete the picture. A restrained layout is also easier to revise: you can replace a struggling specimen or redirect a stem without having to disturb every neighbouring plant.
Choose a compatible plant collection
Consider small tropical ferns, compact Peperomia, suitable Pilea and low-growing Fittonia. Their different leaf forms provide plenty of design possibilities, but check the mature dimensions of the particular plants you select. Not every variety within these groups remains small enough for terrarium growing.
Choose the overall conditions first, then select plants to match. A softly lit foliage garden and a brighter display centred on a particular specimen may need different lighting arrangements. Keeping the collection compatible is more useful than trying to create sharply different climates within a single compact enclosure.
Features that support hands-on plant care
The front-opening door has a push latch and integrated lock, while the removable stainless steel mesh top also locks securely. These access points make planting and maintenance convenient. Three-position adjustable ventilation allows you to alter airflow rather than relying on a permanently sealed environment.
A deep waterproof base supports planted layouts, and rear cable and tubing inlets help organise accessories. The terrarium is prepared for an Exo Terra Monsoon system, including tubing channels and nozzle attachment points, although the misting system is not included.
Create the right growing conditions
Plan the root zone around your chosen plants. A drainage layer beneath the growing medium can hold excess water away from roots, but you will still need to monitor and remove any build-up. Keep the front vents clear and leave an accessible point for inspecting the base after watering.
Use a grow light where natural daylight is insufficient, and make sure the arrangement does not leave the foreground in deep shade. Avoid strong direct sunlight on the glass. Check the substrate as well as the leaves before watering; humid air and wet roots are not the same thing.
The Small Wide is a good format for learning how a planted enclosure changes as it matures. Regular light trimming can preserve the original layout while allowing healthy growth. Suitable animals may also be considered, but only where their space and care requirements are met alongside those of the plants.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Exo Terra Small Wide suitable for a first planted terrarium?
Its cube-shaped format is a practical option for a first mixed planting. Start with a small number of compatible, compact plants and plan lighting, drainage and maintenance access before planting.
How does the Small Wide differ from the Small Low?
Both have a stated 45 x 45cm footprint. The Small Wide is 45cm high, while the Small Low is 30cm high, leaving more overall height for planting in the Wide.
Can I mix ferns and other houseplants in the Small Wide?
Yes, when the specific plants share similar light, temperature and watering requirements. Check their eventual size and avoid combining moisture-loving foliage with plants that need prolonged dry conditions.
Does the Small Wide have a waterproof base?
Exo Terra specifies a deep waterproof bottom for this model. That does not make the whole enclosure an aquarium, and the published dimensions should not be used to calculate a usable water capacity.
How do I stop a planted terrarium becoming overcrowded?
Choose compact plants, leave gaps at planting and trim growth before it blocks light or access. Remove or replace a plant that proves too vigorous for the space.
