Exo Terra Pro Paludarium™ Medium X-Tall
Create a tropical riverbank in miniature with the Exo Terra Pro Paludarium Medium X-Tall. Measuring 60 x 45 x 90cm, it combines a wider planting area with generous height for foliage, branches and mounted specimens. This glass paludarium offers an appealing balance for growers who want a visible water feature below and a substantial planted landscape above, rather than having one element dominate the other.
Room to connect land and water
The 60cm width gives you scope to place a raised bank to one side, an open pool towards the front and taller planting behind. Compared with the Small X-Tall, it adds 15cm of width while retaining the same stated depth and height. Use that extra breadth to separate planting groups and keep the water visible.
A branch angled across the background could link the upper planting to the lower scene. Keep its base clear of service access, and avoid making the bank so bulky that little usable water area remains. Sketching the layout first helps balance planting, equipment and open space before construction begins.
Plant the riverbank, not just the background
Selected Bucephalandra and Anubias are worth considering around the wet transition zone. These plants can be attached to suitable rock or wood rather than buried like ordinary bedding plants. Keep their creeping rhizomes exposed, and check the conditions required for the chosen variety, especially when establishing growth above water.
Use a separate, drained planting area for compact Fittonia and other compatible tropical foliage. A miniature fern or suitable mounted orchid can bring interest higher up. Choose a limited mix of leaf shapes and repeat them through the scene, leaving space for each plant to develop without immediately crowding its neighbours.
Access for planting and water maintenance
Dual front-opening doors with push latches and integrated locks provide access for trimming and cleaning. The removable, lockable stainless steel mesh top is useful when installing larger branches. Three-position adjustable ventilation lets you change airflow, while cable and tubing inlets help keep equipment organised.
The extra-deep lower basin includes a closable bottom drain to assist water changes and excess-water removal. Follow Exo Terra's instructions to fit and leak-test the drainage assembly before use. The enclosure also has tubing channels and nozzle attachment points for an optional Monsoon misting system; the system is not included.
Design the water section for long-term care
Decide on water circulation and filtration before adding the bank. Keep any pump or filter accessible rather than burying it beneath permanent decoration. Water movement, plant growth and a drain do not remove the need to check water quality, remove debris and carry out appropriate maintenance.
Plan lighting across both the width and height of the display, with openings between upper leaves so light can reach lower plants. Keep soil-based planting clear of standing water. A planted pocket should remain moist or dry according to its occupants, not simply follow the level of the pool beside it.
The Medium X-Tall suits a detailed plant-only paludarium with several connected planting zones. Suitable animal inhabitants can be considered separately, provided the finished land area, water volume and growing conditions also meet their care needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the Medium X-Tall paludarium different from the Small X-Tall?
The Medium measures 60 x 45 x 90cm, compared with 45 x 45 x 90cm for the Small, in width, depth and height order. Its extra 15cm of width gives more scope to separate an open water area from raised land planting without increasing the stated depth or height.
Can I grow Anubias and Bucephalandra above water in a paludarium?
Suitable varieties can grow above water in a humid environment, as well as in aquatic arrangements. Keep their roots appropriately moist and their creeping rhizomes uncovered. Check the variety’s requirements and acclimatise plants carefully; leaves grown underwater can struggle when suddenly exposed to drier air.
Does the Medium X-Tall paludarium need a filter?
Filtration needs depend on the water section, planting and any animals. Plan appropriate filtration and circulation for the finished setup, especially where aquatic animals are involved. A moving-water feature needs a suitable pump. The closable bottom drain assists water removal but is not a filter.
How do I change water in the Exo Terra Pro Paludarium Medium X-Tall?
Once correctly assembled, the bottom drain and tap valve provide a way to remove water. Keep the drain and outlet accessible, collect discharged water safely and close the valve afterwards. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and choose a water-change routine suited to the plants and any animals.
Can I create a planted wall in the Medium X-Tall paludarium?
Yes. Its tall format can accommodate a suitably designed planted background or removable plant mounts. Plan drainage, lighting and access before building, and use materials suitable for wet environments. Any background reduces the usable internal space, so allow room for future growth and maintenance.
