Exo Terra Pro Paludarium™ Large X-Tall
Build a generous indoor landscape of foliage, water and branching wood with the Exo Terra Pro Paludarium Large X-Tall. At 90 x 45 x 90cm, this glass paludarium gives you room to combine a broad planted shoreline with height for layered tropical growth. It is a strong choice for a statement plant display, whether you favour a quiet rainforest pool or a more elaborate scene with moving water.
A broad landscape with room for contrast
Use the width to create different views within one composition. A densely planted bank at one end could lead into a more open water area, with a branching feature uniting the two. Repeating a few plants along the shoreline can make the scene feel connected without filling every available space.
Compared with the Medium X-Tall, this model adds 30cm of width while keeping the same stated depth and height. The additional breadth suits longer planting groups, but its 45cm depth still calls for careful planning. Avoid a thick background that consumes space better used for roots, water access and new growth.
Layer plants from the pool to the upper branches
Consider groups of Anubias or suitable Bucephalandra on wood and rock near the water, with their rhizomes left uncovered. Above the pool, use drained planting pockets for compact tropical foliage. Small ferns can break up the outline of larger leaves, while suitable miniature epiphytic orchids can provide individual focal points higher up.
Keep the plant palette compatible rather than treating the enclosure as a home for every moisture-loving species. Choose each plant for the conditions at its exact position. An aquatic plant, a terrestrial fern and a mounted orchid may need very different root conditions even when they share the same humid air.
Features that help with a larger build
Dual front-opening doors with push latches and integrated locks provide access across the display. The lockable stainless steel mesh top is removable, helping when positioning branches and planting the upper levels. Three-position adjustable ventilation gives you control over the ventilation opening without making this a sealed enclosure.
The extra-deep lower basin has a closable bottom drain for water removal. Rear cable and tubing inlets, internal channels and misting-nozzle attachment points help organise equipment. An Exo Terra Monsoon misting system can be added, but is not included. The drain assembly must be correctly fitted and leak-tested before landscaping.
Plan for the finished garden
Choose a flat, level support capable of carrying the completed enclosure, including water, substrate and decoration. Leave practical access to the drainage outlet and any pump or filter. A concealed service area can be useful, provided equipment can still be removed without dismantling the planted bank.
Arrange lighting to reach across the full display and down to the lower foliage. Check plant moisture, water quality and equipment regularly, and trim growth before it blocks light or access. Keep standing water within the lower basin: the enclosure's overall height is not an aquarium filling depth.
The Large X-Tall can remain entirely plant-focused, with reflections and contrasting foliage providing the interest. Suitable animals may also be considered, but the size and layout must meet their specific requirements rather than relying on the product's Large designation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What size is the Exo Terra Pro Paludarium Large X-Tall?
It measures 90cm wide x 45cm deep x 90cm high overall. It is 30cm wider than the Medium X-Tall, with the same stated depth and height. Plan extra clearance for the front doors, lid removal, lighting and access to the drainage connection.
Can the Large X-Tall paludarium be filled to the top like an aquarium?
No. Standing water belongs in the lower basin, below the doors and ventilation. The 90cm height is the overall enclosure height, not a water-depth rating. Install the drain correctly, complete the manufacturer’s leak test and plan the water level within the intended basin.
Can I build a waterfall in the Large X-Tall paludarium?
Yes, as a separately planned feature using a suitable pump, tubing and water-safe construction. Keep the pump accessible, direct the return water into the basin and prevent splashing into planting that needs drainage. A waterfall does not replace suitable filtration or routine water maintenance.
Does the Large X-Tall paludarium control humidity automatically?
No. Its adjustable ventilation lets you change airflow, but it is not an automatic humidity controller. Conditions depend on room temperature, lighting, watering, water features and plant growth. Monitor humidity where needed and adjust the setup to suit your plants. The optional Monsoon misting system is not included.
What should I stand a large planted paludarium on?
Use a flat, level, stable support suitable for the weight of the fully completed setup, not just the empty enclosure. Water, wet growing medium and decoration add substantial weight. Check the support’s load rating and allow access to the drain, cables and any external equipment before filling.
