Heptapleurum arboricola (Dwarf Umbrella Tree)

Heptapleurum arboricola, known as the Dwarf Umbrella Tree, is a graceful evergreen shrub grown for its lush, glossy foliage and easy-going nature. It produces long, slender stalks that hold circular arrangements of leathery leaflets, usually seven to nine per stem. Each leaflet is oval with a smooth surface and rich green tone that reflects light attractively. Mature plants develop multiple stems, forming a compact canopy that resembles a miniature umbrella, giving the plant both height and volume. Its balanced proportions and deep green leaves make it an elegant feature for homes, offices, and conservatories.

Growing Conditions

Heptapleurum arboricola thrives in bright, indirect light but adapts well to moderate shade. It prefers warm indoor conditions, ideally between sixteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius. A free-draining, loamy compost suits it best, allowing roots to remain lightly moist without becoming waterlogged. Water when the surface of the compost begins to dry, and mist occasionally to maintain humidity. It tolerates normal household air but benefits from occasional leaf cleaning to remove dust and restore shine. The plant grows steadily in most rooms and withstands slight neglect, making it highly adaptable.

Care and Maintenance

This species is undemanding and long-lived. Feed every four to six weeks during spring and summer with a diluted, balanced fertiliser. Prune lightly to shape the canopy and remove any damaged or yellowing leaves. Repot every two to three years using fresh compost to maintain vigour. Propagation is straightforward through stem cuttings placed in water or moist compost. Its tidy growth habit and reliable performance make it a perfect plant for busy environments.

Environmental Benefits

Heptapleurum arboricola enhances indoor air quality by filtering pollutants while bringing calm greenery to living and working spaces. Its sculptural foliage provides lasting beauty with minimal care.
