Dracaena fragrans (Dragon Plant)

Dracaena fragrans, commonly known as the Dragon Plant, is a striking evergreen shrub grown indoors for its elegant form and glossy foliage. It develops upright, cane-like stems that carry arching, strap-shaped leaves up to 40 centimetres long. The leaves are typically deep green with a soft sheen, though some varieties feature pale stripes or variegation along the midrib. As it matures, the plant forms clusters of foliage at different heights, giving it a layered, tropical appearance. Its tall, slender habit allows it to stand gracefully in corners or alongside furniture, bringing a calm vertical accent to interior spaces.

Growing Conditions

Dracaena fragrans thrives in bright, filtered light but tolerates partial shade, making it suitable for most rooms. It prefers moderate warmth and humidity with well-drained, loamy compost. Keep the soil evenly moist during spring and summer, reducing watering slightly in winter. Allow the top layer of compost to dry before watering again to prevent root rot. The plant grows best at temperatures between sixteen and twenty-four degrees Celsius. It adapts readily to household conditions and tolerates lower light levels better than many other tropical species.

Care and Maintenance

This low-maintenance houseplant suits both beginners and experienced growers. Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to remove dust and maintain their gloss. Feed every four to six weeks during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Trim any brown tips or damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy. Repot every two to three years using fresh compost to encourage strong root growth. Prune tall stems to promote branching and a fuller shape.

Environmental Benefits

Dracaena fragrans helps improve indoor air quality by filtering airborne impurities. Its lush, tropical foliage adds structure and vitality to homes and offices throughout the year.
