Aloe vera (Barbados Aloe)
Aloe vera, also known as the Barbados Aloe, is an evergreen perennial celebrated for its graceful rosettes of succulent foliage and long-lasting flowers. It grows to around 60 centimetres tall, forming clumps of fleshy, narrow, dull green leaves edged with fine spines. The leaves are slightly curved and store a clear, gel-like sap renowned for its soothing qualities. Mature plants produce tall flower stalks that rise well above the foliage, bearing racemes of tubular greenish-yellow blooms about 3 centimetres long. These vibrant flowers add height and colour contrast to the structural form of the leaves. The plant’s sculptural shape and resilience make it both decorative and practical, ideal for sunny indoor settings or warm conservatories.
Growing Conditions
Aloe vera thrives in bright, direct or filtered sunlight and prefers warm, dry environments. It grows best in a gritty, free-draining cactus compost that allows excess water to escape easily. Water thoroughly but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot, so restraint is essential. Ideal temperatures range between eighteen and twenty-eight degrees Celsius. The plant tolerates dry indoor air well and requires no misting. During the warmer months, it can be placed outdoors in a sunny, sheltered position, provided it is protected from heavy rain or cold nights.
Care and Maintenance
This species is simple to maintain and ideal for low-effort plant collections. Feed sparingly in spring and summer using a diluted cactus fertiliser. Remove older or damaged leaves from the base to maintain a clean shape. Repot every two to three years in fresh compost to refresh nutrients. Propagate easily from offsets once they have developed small roots.
Environmental Benefits
Aloe vera not only adds structure and natural beauty to interiors but also purifies indoor air. Its gel has well-known cooling and moisturising properties, giving it both ornamental and practical value.
