Sansevieria cylindrica (African Spear)
Sansevieria cylindrica, known as the African Spear, is an evergreen perennial admired for its clean lines and sculptural shape. It grows from a rhizomatous base, producing a few thick, tubular leaves that rise upright from a compact rosette. Each leaf measures around 3 centimetres in diameter and can reach up to 1.2 metres in height. The surface is dark green with soft, pale cross-banding, giving the foliage a subtle pattern. Over time, mature plants may produce a tall, slender flower spike carrying small, fragrant blooms in shades of pink or greenish white. These delicate flowers add gentle contrast to the plant’s bold, architectural form.
Growing Conditions
Sansevieria cylindrica thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates partial shade, making it suitable for most rooms. It prefers a free-draining compost designed for succulents or cacti and requires little water. Allow the soil to dry between waterings, especially in winter. This species adapts well to low-humidity indoor environments and endures a wide temperature range, ideally between fifteen and twenty-eight degrees Celsius. When grown in stronger light, the leaves may take on warmer tones, emphasising their natural markings. It performs well in containers and can also grow outdoors during warm months in sheltered positions.
Care and Maintenance
This low-maintenance houseplant suits both beginners and experienced growers. Water sparingly to prevent root rot, and remove any dust with a soft cloth to keep the leaves glossy. Repot every few years using fresh compost to accommodate new growth. Feed lightly during spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Divide offsets from the base to propagate new plants and maintain a tidy arrangement.
Environmental Benefits
Sansevieria cylindrica contributes to improved indoor air quality by filtering airborne toxins and releasing oxygen at night. Its strong vertical shape and resilience make it ideal for minimalist or modern interiors.
