Clematis 'Proteus'

Grow Clematis 'Proteus' if you want layered flowers and a long season of interest. This deciduous climber produces rose-purple blooms, starting with semi-double to fully double flowers in early summer.

A second flush of single flowers follows from late summer into early autumn, extending the display.

  • Height: Up to 2.5m
  • Spread: 1–1.5m
  • Position: Full sun to part shade
  • Soil: Moist but well-drained soil
  • Flowering period: Early summer and late summer to early autumn

Key Features

  • Double and semi-double rose-purple flowers
  • Second flush of single blooms later in the season
  • Good for adding layered texture to planting
  • Compact climber suited to trellis and obelisks

Wildlife Benefits

  • Later flowers provide access for pollinators
  • Supports insects across two flowering periods
  • Climbing habit offers light shelter for insects

Grow it with other climbers to extend flowering across seasons. Do you have plants that provide repeat blooms for wildlife?

Planting Tips

  • Plant with roots shaded and top growth in sun or light shade
  • Provide support such as a trellis or obelisk
  • Water regularly while establishing
  • Prune lightly after the first flush to encourage repeat flowering
  • Mulch to retain moisture and keep roots cool

Place it where you can see the change in flower form. The contrast between double and single blooms adds interest.
