Narcissus 'Llanfair' Bulbs

Narcissus 'Llanfair' is a distinctive trumpet daffodil with upward-facing flowers that combine creamy white and greenish-yellow tones with a beautifully contrasting soft pink trumpet.

Growing to around 30–50cm tall, its elegant colouring and large flowers make it an unusual choice for spring borders, containers and naturalised planting.

  • Height: 30–50cm
  • Spread: 10–15cm
  • Flower colour: cream to greenish white with a pink trumpet
  • Flowering time: spring
  • Group: Trumpet daffodil
  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil

About Narcissus 'Llanfair'

Narcissus 'Llanfair' is particularly interesting because the colouring of its flowers changes as they mature.

Freshly opened blooms have greenish-yellow tones before gradually becoming a softer greenish white to cream. A greenish-yellow ring remains visible around the base of the corona, providing subtle contrast between the outer petals and central trumpet.

The most striking feature is the exceptionally long, cylindrical trumpet. Its delicate pink to peach-pink colouring and gently frilled rim stand out beautifully against the much paler perianth.

The flowers face upwards and outwards, displaying the unusual centre clearly rather than hiding it beneath the bloom.

'Llanfair' belongs to the Trumpet group of daffodils. These varieties produce one flower per stem, with a corona or trumpet as long as, or longer than, the surrounding perianth segments.

Benefits for UK Wildlife

Spring-flowering Narcissus can contribute to a varied wildlife-friendly garden.

  • Flowers may be visited by spring pollinating insects
  • Adds floral diversity to early-season planting
  • Combines well with other pollinator-friendly spring bulbs

Plant alongside crocuses, muscari, primroses and other spring flowers to create a longer succession of blooms.

Where to Grow Narcissus 'Llanfair'

  • Spring garden borders
  • Naturalised planting
  • Cottage gardens
  • Patio pots and containers
  • Mixed bulb displays
  • Under deciduous trees and shrubs

Trumpet daffodils are particularly good for naturalising. In suitable conditions, established groups can gradually increase and provide larger displays each spring.

Planting Tips

  • Plant bulbs in autumn.
  • Choose a sunny or partially shaded position.
  • Plant approximately 10–15cm deep.
  • Space bulbs around 10cm apart.
  • For naturalising, plant in informal groups or drifts.

After flowering, remove faded blooms but allow the foliage to yellow and die back naturally. This gives the leaves time to replenish the bulbs ready for the following year's flowers.

Why Grow Narcissus 'Llanfair'

  • Unusual cream and pink colour combination
  • Flowers change colour as they mature
  • Exceptionally long cylindrical pink trumpet
  • Attractive upward-facing blooms
  • Excellent for naturalising
  • Large, bold spring flowers

If you are looking for a trumpet daffodil with more unusual colouring, Narcissus 'Llanfair' is an excellent choice. Its changing cream and greenish-white petals combined with a long pink trumpet create a distinctive spring display that stands apart from traditional yellow varieties.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to plant daffodil bulbs in the UK?

Daffodil and narcissus bulbs should ideally be planted from September to November in well-drained soil. This gives the bulbs enough time to establish roots before the growing season and ensures a vibrant spring bloom.

How deep should I dig daffodil bulbs?

Plant bulbs at a depth of 2-3 times their height, covering them with soil to protect against frost and pests. Proper depth helps bulbs survive winter and return year after year with healthy foliage and flowers.

Can daffodils be planted with tulips or other spring bulbs?

Yes! Planting daffodils alongside tulips, crocus, or Muscari extends your garden’s spring colour and provides early forage for pollinators. This combination also creates natural drifts and clumps, enhancing your display.

How do I know if my daffodil bulbs are healthy?

Look for signs like firm, plump bulbs with no mould or soft spots. Healthy bulbs have intact tunics and show no signs of disease or damage, ensuring they produce strong shoots and bright flowers in the spring.

When is the best time for autumn planting of spring bulbs?

The ideal time to plant spring flowering bulbs like tulips, daffodils, crocus, and snowdrops is from September to November. Planting during this period allows bulbs to establish roots before winter and ensures a healthy, vibrant bloom in early spring, with stunning green foliage and flower colours ranging from purple and blue to bright yellows and whites.
