Mertensia virginica, commonly called Virginian bluebells, is a captivating plant that boasts deep greyish green foliage with oval, bushy leaves. Its branching stems display gorgeous clusters of nodding, funnel-shaped flowers in a striking violet blue hue. Initially starting as magenta pink buds, the flowers gradually transform into the stunning violet blue as the plant matures.
Mertensia virginica is a versatile and resilient plant that thrives in various environments, with its ideal conditions being well-drained and partially shaded moist soil. These plants should be grown in a sheltered area to protect the stems. With their trumpet-shaped flowers, they are highly attractive to butterflies and require a long-tongued pollinator for pollination.
