Lycoris squamigera (Surprise Lily) Bulbs

Lycoris squamigera, commonly known as the Surprise Lily, is a hardy bulb valued for its unusual flowering habit and fragrant pink blooms.

The flowers appear suddenly on tall leafless stems in late summer, long after the spring foliage has died back.

  • Height: up to 60cm
  • Spread: 20–30cm
  • Flower colour: rose-pink with lilac-blue tips
  • Flowering time: August
  • Position: full sun or partial shade
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil

About Lycoris squamigera

Lycoris squamigera produces clumps of grey-green strap-like leaves in spring.

The foliage dies back completely in early summer.

Later in the season, thick leafless stems suddenly emerge from the soil.

Each stem carries an umbel of 4–7 funnel-shaped flowers.

The blooms are rose-pink with subtle lilac-blue tones at the petal tips and release a pleasant fragrance.

This dramatic flowering behaviour gives the plant its common name, Surprise Lily.

This species is among the most cold-hardy members of the Lycoris genus.

Common names include:

  • Surprise lily
  • Spider lily
