Gladiolus 'Black Star' Corms

Gladiolus 'Black Star' is a dramatic summer-flowering gladiolus known for its exceptionally dark red blooms.

The tall flower spikes carry large velvety flowers in deep red to near-black tones, making this variety a striking feature in borders and container displays.

  • Height: 100–120cm
  • Spread: 20–30cm
  • Flower colour: deep red to red-black
  • Flowering time: July to September
  • Position: full sun
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained soil

About Gladiolus 'Black Star'

Gladiolus 'Black Star' produces tall upright spikes lined with large dramatic flowers.

The blooms are among the darkest gladiolus varieties available, with rich red petals that appear almost black in certain light.

The flowers open gradually along the spike, allowing the display to last for several weeks.

By planting corms in stages during spring, you can extend the flowering season from mid-summer into early autumn.

The strong stems also make this variety an excellent cut flower.

  • Cut flower gardens
  • Mixed perennial beds

  • Cottage garden planting

The tall flower spikes work well toward the middle or back of garden borders.

Planting Tips

  • Plant corms in spring once frost risk has passed.
  • Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil.
  • Plant corms about 10–12cm deep.
  • Space corms around 10–15cm apart.
  • Water during dry periods while plants grow.

In colder areas or heavy soils, lift corms in autumn and store them dry and frost-free until spring. In milder regions with well-drained soil, a thick winter mulch may allow them to remain in the ground.
