About Hyacinthus orientalis 'Aiolos'

'Aiolos' is prized for its beautifully clean white colouring. Each sturdy stem carries a densely packed cylindrical spike made up of numerous waxy, star-shaped flowers. The blooms have the classic rich hyacinth fragrance and contrast beautifully against the plant's upright green leaves.

The neutral white colouring makes 'Aiolos' particularly versatile in planting schemes. It can be combined with almost any other spring bulb, from brightly coloured tulips and narcissi to softer pastel combinations. Alternatively, plant several 'Aiolos' bulbs together for a striking mass of white flowers.

Where to Grow Hyacinth 'Aiolos'

Plant Hyacinthus orientalis 'Aiolos' in a sunny or partially shaded position with fertile, free-draining soil. Avoid sites that remain waterlogged during winter, as prolonged wet conditions can cause bulbs to rot.

Its compact growth makes 'Aiolos' particularly useful near the front of borders and in patio pots and containers. Planting near a path, doorway or seating area is an excellent way to enjoy the fragrance when the flowers open in spring.

How to Plant Hyacinthus 'Aiolos' Bulbs

Plant the bulbs in autumn with the pointed end facing upwards. A planting depth of around 10-15cm is suitable, with approximately 10-15cm between bulbs. For the most impressive display, plant in informal groups rather than individually.

When growing in containers, use a good-quality, free-draining compost and ensure the pot has adequate drainage holes. Bulbs can be planted more closely together in containers for a fuller display, provided they are not touching.

Growing 'Aiolos' in Pots

'Aiolos' is an excellent container hyacinth. Several bulbs planted together will produce a compact display of white flower spikes in early spring. Containers can be positioned on patios, beside entrances or close to windows where their fragrance can be appreciated.

These are untreated bulbs, rather than specially prepared bulbs intended for Christmas forcing. They can still be grown in indoor pots, but should be expected to flower naturally in early spring rather than during the Christmas period.

After Flowering

Remove faded flower spikes after blooming but leave the green foliage in place. The leaves continue to photosynthesise and replenish the bulb for the following year's flowers. Allow them to yellow and die back naturally before removing them.

Established bulbs can remain in the ground where conditions are suitable, returning in subsequent springs. Flower spikes may become slightly less dense over time, but the plants can continue to provide attractive and fragrant spring colour.

Excellent as a Cut Flower

The sturdy stems and highly scented blooms of 'Aiolos' also make excellent cut flowers. A few stems can provide plenty of fragrance indoors. Cut when the lower flowers on the spike have begun to open and place immediately into fresh water.

'Aiolos' normally flowers during March and April in the UK, although timing can vary slightly with local conditions and weather.

How tall does Hyacinth 'Aiolos' grow?
Plants reach approximately 25cm in height when flowering.

Is Hyacinthus 'Aiolos' scented?
Yes. 'Aiolos' produces strongly fragrant flowers with the characteristic sweet scent associated with hyacinths.

Can I grow 'Aiolos' in pots?

Is 'Aiolos' a prepared Christmas hyacinth?
No. These are untreated bulbs intended to flower naturally in spring. They should not be confused with prepared hyacinth bulbs that have been specially treated for flowering around Christmas.

Can I leave the bulbs in the ground after flowering?

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time for autumn planting of spring bulbs?

The ideal time to plant spring flowering bulbs like tulips, daffodils, crocus, and snowdrops is from September to November. Planting during this period allows bulbs to establish roots before winter and ensures a healthy, vibrant bloom in early spring, with stunning green foliage and flower colours ranging from purple and blue to bright yellows and whites.

How long do spring bulbs take to flower?

Most spring bulbs planted in autumn start to flower between February and May, depending on the type. Early bloomers like snowdrops and crocus appear first, while tulips and daffodils follow later in spring, creating a sequential display of colour.

Can I plant different types of spring bulbs together?

Yes! Mixing different bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and muscari adds something extra in terms of colour and texture to your garden. Planting in clusters or drifts creates a natural, layered effect, letting you get a longer flowering season and a richer display for both you and pollinators.

Do I need to remove foliage after flowering?

Yes, but allow leaves to die back naturally rather than cutting them too early. Leaving the foliage lets the plant save energy, which the bulbs use to produce strong, vibrant flowers come next spring.
