Plant Description

Galanthus elwesii 'Godfrey Owen' is a bulbous perennial. It produces grey-green leaves and pure white flowers.

  • The flowers stand on stems approximately 20cm tall.
  • Each bloom has six symmetrical outer petals.
  • These petals open widely, creating a lamp-shade form.
  • Inside, six shorter petals each feature a single green mark at the tip.

Key Features

  • Height and Spread: Grows to around 20cm tall with a spread of 10cm.
  • Wildlife Benefits: This plant provides a vital nectar source for early-emerging queen bumblebees and other pollinators when little else is in flower.
  • Also Known As: This plant is a type of Giant Snowdrop.

Planting Tips

You can plant these bulbs in two ways.

  • For the best results, plant your bulbs as soon as you receive them.
  • Choose a spot with well-drained soil that receives dappled shade.
  • Plant the bulbs at a depth roughly two to three times their own height.
  • If your soil is heavy clay, add some horticultural grit to the planting hole to improve drainage.
  • You can also naturalise them in grass; simply lift a piece of turf, place the bulbs underneath, and replace the turf.
